At the Clusters Meet Regions event in Regensburg, the “Regensburg AI Driver’s License” was introduced to a European audience as a practical example of how citizen-oriented AI education can support regional innovation strategies. In her presentation, Katja Eichinger (AIR Artificial Intelligence Regensburg) outlined the concept, objectives, and impact of the initiative, highlighting its role within Regensburg’s broader Smart City and mobility ecosystem.
The AI Driver’s License is designed as an accessible, 20-minute digital learning journey that familiarises citizens with fundamental concepts of artificial intelligence. Structured around six interactive stations, the programme combines short videos, illustrative examples from everyday life, and region-specific applications with a focus on mobility, urban innovation, and digital transformation in Regensburg. Participants who complete the learning path receive a digital certificate, signalling basic AI literacy and supporting broader public engagement with new technologies.
By integrating the programme into the European context of Clusters Meet Regions, the presentation demonstrated how regions can strengthen digital skills in society and anchor AI understanding beyond expert environments. The initiative reflects a growing need for citizen-centred competence building as AI becomes an integral part of public services, mobility solutions, and urban development.
The wider Clusters Meet Regions event brought together cluster organisations, industry representatives, and policymakers from multiple levels to discuss cross-innovation approaches and strategies for resilient, competitive regional ecosystems. In this setting, the Regensburg AI Driver’s License served as a concrete example of how educational tools, cluster cooperation, and regional innovation agendas can reinforce each other.
With its strong local relevance, approachable format, and potential for transferability, the AI Driver’s License showcased how Regensburg positions itself as a model for engaging citizens in the digital transformation and strengthening AI literacy across Europe.
