Bringing Innovations to the Masses: Uwe Pfeil Presents the R_LAB Mobility at the BMWE’s Annual Regional Policy Conference
On March 2, 2026, Uwe Pfeil, Cluster Manager of the Cluster Mobility & Logistics, was a guest at the BMWE’s annual regional policy conference in Halle (Saale). His presentation focused on the Regensburg real-world lab R_LAB Mobility—and the crucial question: How do sustainable mobility concepts make the transition from theory to real-world practice?
Innovation under real-world conditions
Before representatives from politics, business, and academia, Pfeil demonstrated how urban mobility can be tested and scaled in public spaces under real-world conditions. The R_LAB Mobility at Regensburg’s Galgenberg is a core project of the REGENSBURG_NEXT smart city program. In close collaboration with the City of Regensburg and Stadtwerk.Regensburg, intelligent street lighting, environmental sensors, and data-driven traffic control are being successfully tested there in practice.
Data as the Foundation of Smart Cities
A key factor in the success of the real-world lab is the structured handling of mobility data. All collected information flows into a central data hub, which is currently being developed by Stadtwerk.Regensburg and is open to research and corporate partners. This approach not only creates a robust foundation for regional economic development—it also strengthens the digital sovereignty of all stakeholders.
Regensburg as a Pioneer in Cluster Policy
The presentation in Halle highlighted how Regensburg is successfully making the transition from local pilot projects to scalable smart city solutions: through the consistent integration of applied research and industry. The Cluster Mobility & Logistics thus sets a clear goal—not only to develop innovations, but to disseminate them widely, sustainably, and effectively.
