The “Regensburg AI Driver's License” is an innovative learning program that takes citizens on a virtual journey of discovery through the world of AI. The web application aims to get different population groups—whether young or old, German or English speakers—excited about AI in a playful, easy-to-understand, and practical way. The approximately 20-minute learning journey offers six stations with interactive content, videos, and practical examples from everyday life – with a strong connection to the Regensburg region, especially in the areas of mobility and smart cities. Successful participants will receive a digital certificate with a signal effect: the “Regensburg AI Driver's License”.

Regensburg AI Driver's License application project

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a key technology of the future with great potential for society. In order to exploit this potential and use the technology responsibly, we first need a basic understanding of what AI is, how it works, and what opportunities and risks it entails. To this end, the Regensburg AI Driver's License was developed in cooperation with regional stakeholders.

Goals

  • Create access to AI: Develop a free, low-threshold learning platform for AI – tailored to Regensburg citizens.
  • Promote understanding: Teach basic knowledge about AI, including ethical issues, data protection, and responsible use.
  • Generate enthusiasm and build skills: Empower citizens to understand, apply, and critically reflect on AI—e.g., through practical tips.
  • Break down barriers: Reduce fears, reservations, and barriers to access AI through understandable, everyday content.

Innovative technology

  • Digital learning platform: Interactive web application with videos, quizzes, and gamification elements.
  • Regional narrative: Well-known locations and local actors as well as application examples from the city of Regensburg, e.g., in the field of mobility.
  • Mobile first: Optimized for smartphones and tablets.
  • Open source & GDPR-compliant: Hosting in Germany, platform as a scalable, modularly expandable offering.
  • Gamification and digital certificate as a reward

Project duration: February 1, 2025 – December 31, 2026

Project R_Lab Mobility – Real-world laboratory for urban mobility

The project is part of R_Lab Mobility and contributes to key objectives of the Regensburg Plan 2040:

  • Mobility: Raising awareness of AI-supported mobility solutions, e.g., traffic flow analysis
  • Digital city: Promoting digital skills among the population
  • Sustainability: Raising awareness of responsible AI use
  • Education & participation: Enabling access to future technologies for all

Outlook & further development

Following the successful launch, an expansion to include additional topics such as sustainability is conceivable. The open-source approach also makes it possible to transfer the project to other cities.
