On February 24 and 25, 2026, the 8th Regensburg Hydrogen Conference, titled “Hydrogen Rollout – Challenges and Prospects,” took place at OTH Regensburg. The Cluster Mobility & Logistics was on site with an information booth, and project manager Katja Eichinger used the event to network with stakeholders from the research and business communities.
GP JOULE kicked off the second day of the conference with a practical “reality check”: Large-scale facilities are still considered uncharted territory in many places, and anchor customers and bankability remain key to implementation. At the same time, the hydrogen core network was cited as an important step toward resolving the chicken-and-egg problem between supply and demand—despite existing challenges such as schedule delays and infrastructure “gaps.”
Cluster member Sonplas, together with partner WTZ Roßlau, presented the IAV Cross Injection Analyzer—including the question of to what extent tests can realistically be replicated using less hazardous gases.
Dr.-Ing. Jörn Brauns from IAV GmbH provided clear system perspectives by comparing hydrogen and derivatives such as ammonia and methanol along the PtX value chain, particularly with regard to efficiency.
Another highlight was the presentations and posters on current research projects at OTH Regensburg, such as BiReMiH2 (Ottfried Schmidt, Sophia Fischer) in collaboration with cluster member Hyperthermics, as well as other projects at TC Kelheim led by Prof. Dr. Hans-Peter Rabl and Orbit II (Kathrin Rettinger).
To provide regional context, bayernets bridged the gap between supraregional infrastructure and concrete local supply. The BERR supplemented this with the Regensburg East Energy Park (ERO), a successful example of how regional models can support supply prospects for industry and location development.
Many thanks to the organizing team led by Anna Tommek for the invitation and the professional execution of the conference.
