NewSense Engineering GmbH, a member of the Cluster Mobility & Logistics, was the only German startup nominated for the “European SME Digital Society Award.” The competition is organized by the European DIGITAL SME Alliance and recognizes innovative solutions that harness digital technologies for the common good. Among 23 finalists from across Europe, the Regensburg-based startup was the only German representative - a remarkable achievement that underscores the region’s innovative strength.
NewSense was nominated for its AI-based safety solution, “AI-based Preventive Crowd Safety at Mega Events.” The software platform combines a novel 3D sensor system with artificial intelligence and enables the precise monitoring of crowd flows at large-scale events - in real time, in compliance with data protection regulations, and highly scalable. Features include 3D live monitoring, heat maps for detecting hazardous situations, and structured documentation for optimizing safety concepts. The technology is already being successfully deployed at UEFA Champions League matches and in numerous European soccer stadiums, and has also been tested in Regensburg in a smart city context.
The “ReSense3D” collaboration project was developed as part of the municipal real-world laboratory for urban mobility, “R_Lab Mobilität.” The goal was to create a data protection-compliant 3D model for analyzing and optimizing urban mobility at the central bus station of the University of Regensburg. The solution combines advanced sensor technology with AI-supported data analysis to capture passenger flows and mobility needs - a forward-looking contribution to sustainable transportation infrastructure.
The connection to the European DIGITAL SME Alliance was established through the Cluster Mobility & Logistics innovation network, which is based at TechBase Regensburg. Through the cooperation of the cluster, universities, and digital initiatives, an interdisciplinary project was made possible that has achieved European visibility.
“This nomination is not only a testament to the startup’s innovative strength, but also to the strategic added value of our cluster work in Regensburg,” said Uwe Pfeil, Cluster Manager Mobility & Logistics. “The example of NewSense Engineering shows how regional networking can give rise to technologies of European relevance.”
