With the official launch of the M-AIR (Multimodal AI for Adaptive Intralogistics and Robotics) research and development network, a new network has been created that aims to significantly advance the digitalisation, automation and networking of industrial intralogistics. Under the management of the Clusters Mobility & Logistics and AIR Artificial Intelligence Regensburg, based at TechBase Regensburg, innovative AI applications are being developed that will particularly benefit small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The M-AIR R&D network aims to develop multimodal AI models for adaptive robotic systems that can be flexibly integrated into existing and new intralogistics environments. The focus is on combining technologies such as voice control, computer vision, data fusion and digital twins. The use of so-called large AI language models (LLMs) for interactive task description and process control represents a particular aspect of innovation.
Insights into planned developments:
- Voice-controlled mission definition for mobile robots
- Intelligent path and navigation planning for autonomous systems
- Adaptive bin picking solutions with multimodal AI
- Remodelling and retrofitting existing intralogistics systems
The network, which was officially launched on 6 October 2025 with a workshop attended by around 20 participants from industry and science, is part of the innovation funding provided by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy as part of the Central Innovation Programme for SMEs (Zentrales Innovationsprogramm Mittelstand ZIM). The project, which is funded with €135,000, will initially run for one year until the end of September 2026.
‘The aim is to develop practical AI prototypes that prove themselves in real intralogistics scenarios,’ says cluster manager Uwe Pfeil.
