On June 25, 2025, a workshop was held at TechBase Regensburg to establish a working group on the topic of “Embedded AI in Production.” The event was organized by the Cluster Mobility & Logistics together with the AIR Cluster and met with great interest: More than 20 experts from industry, research, and development came together to discuss the potential and challenges of this forward-looking technology.
After a brief welcome by cluster manager Uwe Pfeil, Prof. Matthias Ehrnsperger from the East Bavarian Technical University of Regensburg opened the discussion with his presentation “Revolution in Manufacturing: Using Edge AI for Real-Time Intelligence in Production.” He demonstrated how the integration of AI directly into sensors and devices – without detouring via the cloud – opens up new possibilities in process optimization.
Viktor Bilousov from SYSTEMA GmbH then presented exciting insights into the “fully automated semiconductor factory” and the role of AI in plant integration and production control. His practical example underscored how highly automated processes can be made even more efficient through intelligent control systems.
In the interactive part of the workshop, specific challenges and innovative ideas relating to embedded AI were collected and developed further. After the coffee break, the participants presented their results in short pitches. A wide range of possible applications and issues relating to embedded AI were discussed, from technical challenges and questions of integration into existing production environments to economic aspects and future opportunities for cooperation.
The great commitment of the participants and the multitude of ideas presented show that the topic of embedded AI is driving the industry forward. The establishment of the working group laid an important foundation for continuous exchange, joint projects, and stronger regional networking in this field of technology.
