The Regensburg e-mobility cluster is part of the Europe-wide “Safe and Sustainable Mobility” platform. Regions from all over Europe have joined forces in this network to collaborate on sustainable mobility in the long term. The platform is led by the regions of Bavaria, Ile-de-France, and Aragon. The kick-off meeting with all network partners took place in Brussels on January 23, 2019.
The main objective of the platform is to find joint solutions to the industrial challenges associated with the transition to a low-carbon and digitized road transport system. Experts expect this transition to disrupt the competitiveness of SMEs and thus the regional socio-economic environment. Although 75 percent of motor vehicles are manufactured by automotive suppliers, the transformation of the road transport system is not just a matter for motor vehicle manufacturers. 14 million jobs in Europe depend on the automotive industry, and the sector ranks first in Europe in terms of R&D investment. In a rapidly changing environment, this industry faces numerous scientific, technological, and economic challenges.
As the future of the automotive industry depends on its ability to meet the mobility challenges of tomorrow, it is necessary for public and private stakeholders with different business interests to work together in an interdisciplinary manner. Mobility and logistics clusters therefore play a central role by contributing to the competitiveness of the EU transport industry and sharing expertise within a common ecosystem.
Overview of preliminary topics for projects of the “Safe and Sustainable Mobility” platform:
1. Intelligent vehicles (e.g., connectivity, autonomous driving, new services, 5G, mechatronics)
2. Intelligent infrastructure (e.g., intelligent roads, dynamic parking, risk assessment)
3. Sustainable mobility (e.g., energy and resource efficiency, decarbonization, advanced chemistry, physical internet, illumination of vehicle materials)
4. Safe mobility (e.g., IoT, cybersecurity, complex systems engineering, human-machine interface software)
